Assignment 1.2: Industrialization After the Civil War

After the Civil War, the United States became a much more industrialized society. Between 1865 and 1920, industrialization improved American life in many ways. However, industrialization also created problems for American society. Consider events that took place after the Civil War and discuss ways that industrialization affected the U.S. between 1865 and 1920.

You have already developed a thesis statement and developed an outline in which you identify three main points relevant to your topic. Now you will develop the final paper in which you explore your main points in detail.

Write a three to five (3-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Introduce your paper with your previously crafted thesis statement.
  2. Discuss three (3) major aspects of industrialization between 1865 and 1920.  In your response, consider society, the economy, and politics.
  3. Identify three (3) specific groups that were affected by industrialization and provide two examples for each group describing how the group was affected. (Consider issues such as race, ethnicity, gender, child labor, etc.)
  4. Summarize how industrialization affected the life of the average working American during this period. Use specific examples and details.
  5. Use at least three (3) academic references besides or in addition to the textbook. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA style or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Identify and discuss the different ways that the heritage of slavery, the Civil War, the Reconstruction, and segregation have shaped America’s history.
  • Summarize and discuss the ways that formal policies of government have influenced the direction of historical and social development in the United States.
  • Recognize the major turning points in American history since the Civil War.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in contemporary U.S. history.
  • Write clearly and concisely about contemporary U.S. history using proper writing mechanics.

HIS 331 WORLD WAR 2

Write an eight- to ten-page paper (excluding the title and reference pages) based on a reflective consideration of the consequences of the Second World War. Select three of the most important consequences of the war. Include a distinct thesis statement which serves as your main idea and touches on all three of these consequences.

For each consequence you select, include the following in your analysis:

  • Interpret the events that led up to that consequence.
  • Describe the reasons why these events were especially      important.
  • Analyze the short- and long-term impact on the major      powers involved in the war.

Evaluate the consequences in terms of the human experience of combatants/non combatants, men/women, and those within occupied/unoccupied countries.

Keep in mind that there are no right or wrong answers. The Second World War produced multiple significant consequences and there are numerous possible selections that could serve as the basis of a successful paper. The Final Paper will be graded less on the choice of three consequences and more on how the consequences and their significance are presented and analyzed. The paper must use at least eight scholarly sources, exclusive of any assigned readings for the course, which must be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. At least two must be from the Ashford University Library.

Writing the Final Paper

The Final Research Paper:

  • Must be eight to ten double-spaced pages (excluding the      title page, reference page, etc.) in length and formatted according to APA      style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a cover page that includes:
    • Name of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must include an introductory paragraph with a succinct      thesis statement.
  • Must address the topic of the paper with critical      thought.
  • Must conclude with a restatement of the thesis and a      conclusion paragraph.
  • Must use APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing      Center to document all sources.
  • Must include, on the final page, a Reference List that      is completed according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing      Center.

The useful life of a particular application will vary based on advancements in a given discipline. It is critical to continuously seek and identify new ways to adapt technology. Describe in detail the process to evaluate alternative or replacement applications for existing technologies and explain at what point in the lifecycle should this process be initiated.

Affirmative Action

As the manager of human resources (HR) in a medium-size company that is involved with several Affirmative Action initiatives, you have noticed that the racial makeup of your workforce has an increasing number of multiracial employees (or workers who are the offspring of a biracial couple). You are wondering how these employees should be counted in any kind of attempt to implement Affirmative Action.

In other words, if future hiring is meant to make the workforce relatively proportionate to the population’s racial mix, should workers who are, for example, offspring of an African-American mother and a Caucasian father be counted as White, African-American, or neither? Explain your answer.

Discuss the following information:

  • The trend being seen in the general population in terms of people who could be characterized as biracial.
  • Study the following table and comment on the views of multiracial people regarding Affirmative Action found

    Interviewees’ Attitudes Toward Affirmative Action

    View on Affirmative Action

    Overall

Pro-AA and in favor of biracial persons qualifying

    58%

Mixed feelings about AA but believe all biracial persons should qualify

    23%

Pro-AA but unsure whether or not biracial persons who appear white should qualify

    4%

Pro-AA but believe biracial persons who appear white should not qualify

    4%

Opposed to AA but believe biracial persons should qualify as long as it exists

    11.5%

    (Korgen, 1999)

How do you think biracial people should be counted in terms of Affirmative Action initiatives? Explain your answer from an objective perspective. This should be the main focus in your discussion.
